The MECAssist Model

We appreciate that some organisations prefer consultants to simply do the job and get out; other organisations prefer a longer tem relationship.

Approach

Our approach to a long-term business relationship with our customers consists of three elements:

Education

One of the keys to a successful company is the ability of its managers to be a successful team, i.e. people with a mix of different skills working as a coherent unit. We believe that one of the greatest aids to achieve coherence is the ability of members of a team to understand the imperatives of each of the functional departments within the business so as to achieve 'team knowledge'. Team knowledge provides a level of common understanding that allows ideas and business needs to be freely communicated. This communication in turn leads to alignment between differing business functions to achieve business goals.

In most the organisation the formal structure consists of different functional departments where managers grow within the department until they reach a senior position when they are often required to take on more general management roles. Unfortunately the pressures in the competitive world of today often results in functional managers not having the time, or the opportunity, to fully appreciate the pressures being experienced in other departments. This can result in tensions between departments reducing the organisation's effectiveness and ability to compete in the market, increasing further the competitive pressure on functional managers.

The MEC Services approach is to try to break this cycle by establishing this 'team knowledge'. For an organisation that requires a holistic approach this can be gained through the toolkit of management techniques provided in the 5-Day Business School Course. This course covers the differing business functions within the organisation and brings together the differing functional managers as they learn to create a coherent strategic plan for a hypothetical organisation. The format for the course allows them to improve their understanding of the theory and practice behind other disciplines and how these can work together to set and meet business goals.

Organisations that require assistance on a specific area, or those that need a more in depth understanding of a particular issue, may be more interested in concentrating on the specific topic through the other courses offered by MEC Services.

Facilitation

To retain a competitive edge it is necessary for organisation to continuously adopt new management techniques that have been proven to bring real advantage in practice. However, even where the management team has developed a significant level of team understanding, they may still face cultural pressures that hinder the application of this understanding.

The detailed knowledge of these new management techniques will often rest with a specific department within the organisation and external consultants / academics.

We recognise the danger of using consultants that the workforce may consider them an outside agency that have little understanding of their jobs, introducing the latest fad. Therefore, the MEC Services approach is that a member of the organisation's management team always takes the lead role in the introduction and implementation of new ideas.

MEC Services can supply some independent assistance to help individuals and departments to overcome organisational cultural barriers through facilitating knowledge sharing sessions while also providing additional external insights in the techniques concerned. This role can be on a regular basis or even on an ad hoc basis helping to resolve differences of opinion as they occur.

Ongoing Support

Even when new tools and techniques have become the norm within the organisation, the competitive advantages they bring are starting to depreciate as the competitors also take them on board. Everyday pressures may also prevent the business from hearing that there have been improvements to existing techniques or totally new areas from which they could benefit.

The understanding of the organisation’s requirements that MEC Services gains of the through the initial two phases allows it to offer ongoing support by updating management through providing information on relevant new tools. This could be through a simple email, providing web access, or restarting the whole MEC Service 3 stage process.
